Rubber Soul: THE Beatles Tribute in Dallas, TX
December 2, 2003
Hello friends! It's been a very long time. It's amazing how we still get email from people that are wanting to know what's going on with us. Unfortunately, the answer, in musical terms, is pretty simple. In other aspects of life, it's as busy and hectic as you can imagine!
In the musical realm, we have continued to scour the streets, papers, music stores, dark alleys, and other odd places where you'll find musicians, and we have yet to find someone that we feel is up to our high standards. Sigh. Yup. We miss it too. At this point, it's enough to put us off the idea of getting Rubber Soul going again.
It's hard to believe that its been over three years now since the last Rubber Soul gig. Fortunately our buddy, Pete, is still going strong and playing with the Monkey Boys. We caught them a few weeks ago at The Cavern. It was a lot of fun to hang out with the few of our old fans that were there, and many thanks to Pete for his tribute to our nights at The Cavern.
So, now you're asking, what does it all mean? Good question.
For now it means that the rest of us on concentrating on our families, jobs and homes. In fact, some of us are doing our best to bring new Beatles fans into the world and having a bit of success with it. Yup, we're talking babies, diapers, strollers, car seats, up all night and all that. And it's all worth it. So you can see, we've been far from idle. But back to the musical realm...
We've been getting together lately and are working on some new material. We don't know where it's going to lead us. We might even be putting together an original band, and as you might expect, the influence of the Beatles will be strongly heard. For now, like our children, it's in it's infancy and has a good long way to go before it sees the light of day. Regardless, we won't rest until something comes of it. So look out. You'll probably see us again before you even know it.
Until then, peace, love and happy holidays!

For the past three years, Rubber Soul has made a big splash on the Dallas music scene. Having played at all the premiere music venues in Dallas such as The Cavern, Club Dada and The Greenville Avenue Bar and Grill, as well as opening for the Commodores at The Richardson Wildflower Festival, Rubber Soul has gone about making a name as one of the funnest and most talented group of musicians in the area. But, as in all areas of life, change is inevitable.
On August 26, 2000, Rubber Soul had their last gig with their original lineup of Pete, Tom, Tim and Brett. Everyone, fans and band members alike, were sad to see Pete go. There were a lot of tears shed that night at Laura's Last Chance in memory of all the great music and good times that had been shared by this group in the past three years. The fact that the band did one of their best sets ever at Club Dada the previous night didn't make it any easier on the boys. However, as they say in show business, "Get me a beer!", or as is said in Rubber Soul, "Blimey, we've got to get us a new guy!".
Thusly, the search began.
The word went out in August and the auditions began. Musicians from all over the area answered the call. The boys met lots of great guys and some really talented musicians. As you might expect, finding a replacement for a talented musician in a band that has set some high expectations is not an easy thing. There aren't a lot of people out there who can foot the bill.
Thusly, the search continues.
In the meantime, the music is still beckoning and the remaining three members, Tom, Tim and Brett, can't be left to sit idle. In the truest Beatle spirit, several friends from other Beatle bands have offerred their talents as subs until a permanent member can be found. Notably, Mark Ehmann, the Paul McCartney for Hard Night's Day, a well known Dallas act, will be sitting in on several upcoming dates. Mark, with his look, voice and bass playing, is arguably the most recognizable member of Hard Night's Day and Rubber Soul is overjoyed to have him filling in. Thanks, Mark!
So just when you thought it might be safe to go out in public again, Rubber Soul appears when you least expect them. They're The Guerillas of Guitar, The Purveyors of Pop, The Bards of the Beat... They're Rubber Soul and they're still in action.
Stay bookmarked to their gig page to keep track of the upcoming dates featuring Mark Ehmann.

Rubber Soul began as the dream of four musicians who wanted to play Beatles music as authentically as possible. There were already other bands in the area playing the Beatles, but they left something to be desired. In fact, the members of Rubber Soul are big fans of these other bands, but they felt that there was more that could be done in homage to the original recordings. With this in mind, the four began their mission.
While the other bands in the area were competition for gigs, Rubber Soul decided that the Beatles were the only competitors for the sound. To that end, they began their quest for the right guitars, basses, amps, keyboards and drums to recreate the sounds that are on the original recordings. Most importantly, they began to work on the vocal characteristics of each singer in order to create the vocal sounds and blend that the Beatles had. This, they felt, was the key to being the most authentic and legitimate cover of the Beatles. Apparently, at least some of it worked.
Their first gig came at the then brand new Dallas club called, appropriately enough, The Cavern. The first show had plenty of rough edges. But there were some magical moments too. Enough of those must have occurred within the first 20 minutes, because it was at that point the club owner knew that he wanted Rubber Soul as his house band. And so, the word was out. There was a new show in town.
In the coming weeks, more and more people came to see the band and at the same time, they began to get bookings all over town. The crowds were telling Rubber Soul that they were great. Many, even fans of the other bands, were telling them that they were the best in Dallas. Then, the guys from the other bands began to show up to see what the talk was all about. They soon realized that the bar had just been raised and that they weren't going to be allowed to rest on their laurels.
Rubber Soul continues to raise the bar by playing ANYTHING the Beatles played. Its tough to do the entire catalog of Beatle recordings when all you have is four guys armed with guitars, keyboards, bass and drums. But Rubber Soul made a decision to do anything the Beatles did. So they have this magical box of electronics that they have dubbed "George-Martin-inna-box". With this gizmo, they do one of the most amazing versions of "The Walrus" that you'll hear live anywhere.
Speaking of live, with their growing popularity, you can catch Rubber Soul at a lot of different places around the metroplex. The Cavern is still their home and is the best place to see them. Watch the Dallas Observer or bookmark this web site for a listing of their upcoming gigs. Then get out there and shake it up, baby!
